2024-09-14 Fishing with Jun & Terry

A friend of mine recently posted on Facebook that he caught 15 Silvers on a fishing trip. I happened to run into him so of course I asked him where he got them. He told me he got them at Dall Head, which is at the SE end of Gravina Island.

Here is a map snippet that shows our track from Bar Harbor out to Dall Head and back. It's about 18 miles one way to get out there. My boat is slow so that's about a 2-hour run for me.

My daughter Karen started working in the PeaceHealth lab in mid-July, and she's been making new friends of her co-workers there. For this trip she invited Jun Li, who also works in the lab with her. He had fished only on lakes in the past and was excited to make a trip on the ocean.

I had invited my friend and famous artist Terry Pyles to come along too.

Karen came along too but she did not fish.

To make a long story short, we trolled back and forth for about 5 hours and caught nothing! It was quite disappointing, and somewhat depressing. I tried changing out the gear, changing the depths we were fishing, following the power trollers, everything I could think of. But nothing worked and we got skunked.

We pulled the lines and headed in at 2:45 PM.

On August 25th in Ketchikan there was a devastating landslide that killed one man and injured others. It resulted in the closure of one of our major roads in town. I got a shot of the current state of the landslide site. The road has been cleared of debris and they have hydroseeded the areas above and below the slide area, but the road is still closed to traffic.

We got into the slip at 5 PM after logging about 44 miles on this non-productive trip.

Hopefully there will be better days ahead for fishing.
